Satellite internet explained
Most internet connections are “wired,” meaning that they use cables or phone lines to transmit data over long distances. The data is filtered through a modem and router to reach your computer, where it’s translated into what you see on your screen, whether that’s text, images or streaming movies.
Satellite internet doesn’t require wires, which means it’s available just about anywhere in the world. You’ll still need cables to connect your satellite dish to your home devices, but it doesn’t require you to connect to an outside source. Instead, you use your satellite dish, which connects to a satellite in space and one at your internet provider’s location to bounce signals back and forth. This is extremely similar to how satellite TV works.
First, you and your computer make what’s called the initial request, such as when you open your browser and type in a URL. The browser requests that data through your satellite dish, which bounces the signal into space. The signal can travel tens of thousands of miles in an instant.
Next, the satellite sends the information you requested to the HughesNet satellite at their hub. The HughesNet center finds the information you wanted, like loading a webpage or streaming a TV show, and sends the response back to the satellite in space. The information is then bounced back to you and your satellite dish, which “fulfills the request.”
All of these interactions take just moments to happen, even though vast amounts of data are traveling thousands of miles in a fraction of a second—score one for the miracles of modern technology! No matter where you are, you can access the internet at high speeds, making it possible to work, play and communicate right from your couch.
