Choosing the Best Spot to Install Your Satellite Dish

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make after you opt to move forward with DirecTV installation in San Bernardino County is where you will install the satellite dish on your property.

What factors should go into the decision of where you’ll install your satellite dish? Let’s take a look.

Choosing your installation location

To make an informed decision as to where you will install your dish, you need to at least have a basic understanding of how satellite dishes function.

Your dish will connect with a satellite that is in a geosynchronous orbit with the earth, meaning it travels in a synchronized manner with the planet. The satellite is located somewhere over the equator, which means, since you live in the northern hemisphere, your dish will need to be pointed south. This means the best place to install the dish on your property is going to be somewhere you get a clear, unobstructed view of the southern sky, as that’s the direction from which the satellite signals will be coming.

Your dish will need a cable connection to the satellite receiver and your television, so the farther away from your home it’s located, the more difficult it becomes to power it. You’ll also need to make sure the dish has a stable, secure mounting surface.

So, knowing all of this, where should you install the dish on your property?

The most popular locations tend to be on the roofs of homes or garages, because this is where there is most likely to be a clear view of the sky. You might be worried about causing damage to your roof, but satellite installers are generally very good with installing mounting hardware and platforms in such a way that they are also able to protect the roofing structure and shingles from any damage.

However, if you live in an area with a lot of tree cover around your house or garage, you might have to get a little more creative about the placement of your satellite. There are some people who use metal or wooden poles, on top of which they can mount the satellite dish. This gives you a bit more flexibility with where on your property you will install the dish, as you can build the pole in an area where you can be certain you will have unobstructed views of the southern sky at all times. If you go with the pole method, make sure it is anchored properly with concrete under the ground, which will help keep the pole (and the dish installed on it) stable during particularly windy and stormy weather.

While aesthetics can play a role in determining where you install your dish, you should never let aesthetics get in the way of function. The most important thing is ensuring you’re giving yourself reliable service.
